Introduction:

Water is a major source of pollutants and contaminants, which cause several ailments. High levels of Nitrate pose a serious problem in different regions of the country. The presence of excessive quantities of nitrates or nitrites in drinking water causes "Infantile Methhaemoglobinaemia" in infants less than three months of age. Several studies have correlated nitrate in drinking water with gastric cancer.

During field studies the need of a small, portable, low cost, indigenously developed water analysis kit was realized, which could be easily transported to rural areas and ensure effective monitoring of nitrate.
