The content of fluoride in drinking water attracts public attention due to its various health effects. On one hand, fluoride is added to drinking water in small quantities to prevent dental caries. On the other hand fluoride is a know carcinogen, a bone seeker and is a cause for brittle bones and hip fractures. All sorts of fluorine compounds are toxic and chemically very active. Fluoride accumulates in the body and causes not only skeletal and teeth damage but also changes in the DNA structure resulting in paralysis of volition, cancer, etc. Growth of children is retarded due to excessive quantity of fluoride in drinking water. Recent observations point to fluoride as the main culprit for the development of cataract of the eyes in the fluoride affected regions.

According to WHO the quantity of fluoride should not exceed 1.5 PPM in drinking water.
